I work for United Airlines (Boo, I know) now because they pay more money than the Nordics I worked for before. A byproduct of that is I get to fly for free. Denver is one of the places they fly direct to from Toronto, and the lady wants to go there in mid-October and do some hiking because trees changing colour and whatnot. Anyways, when we land in DEN we’re going to rent a car and we’re looking to get a lodge somewhere. I know NOTHING about Colorado. But this lodge stuck out to me because I dig old things that remind me of being a kid.

So in this general area, where are some good places to hike, what are some good/interesting places to visit? Also, where would you recommend staying? We’re going for three days (a Friday-Sunday).

Right up by Estes Park is Rocky Mountain National Park. You can’t go wrong with a hike in there. Also a pretty entertaining drive through the mountains across the park. Estes Park is a cool little mountain town. The Stanley Hotel is in town as well. It served as the inspiration for the hotel in “The Shining” and was a filming location for “Dumb & Dumber”. Also is haunted. Blackhawk is a cool little casino town west of Denver. Then there is Mount Evans or Pikes Peak if you want to drive to 14000ft. Tons of stuff to do, have fun.

You'll be past fall colors by then but you can probably still find some good hiking. I'm sure you'll get some info before I can think of useful advice but I'm stranded at LAX now (thanks, American) and I'm too tired to think.

Top of Evans is closed already. But the cog railway on Pikes is always open, weather permitting!

Air is seriously thin in Denver ... I easily got winded walking around, and the wife passed out after half a drink. Be careful while hiking.

You could spend the whole 3 days in Estes Park, and not go wrong. Trail Ridge Road will likely be closed by then. There’s a Shelby museum in Boulder, if you want to do something car related.
